About Nicholas

Nicholas Crombach is a Toronto based artist and holds a BFA in Sculpture and Installation from OCAD University.

Nicholas produces sculptural work that interrupts a nostalgic reading while referencing historical traditions, styles, and motifs. Employing the markers of tradition to critique social rituals, his work blurs the overlapping states of companionship, survival, and cruelty, while calling into question the inherent pitfalls and hierarchies of human-animal relationships.

Nicholas has exhibited his sculptural work nationally and internationally. Nicholas’s most recent solo exhibition The End of The Chase, was exhibited at New Art Projects, London, UK (May, 2018) and was re-presented in August at Art Mur, Berlin. The exhibition includes a life-size sculptural work, Fetch, in which a stag surrounded by baying hounds becomes a hybrid of historical hunting scenes and the aesthetic of modern day dog paraphernalia. Fetch is displayed alongside a variety of cast-porcelain chew-toys marked with gold lustre and aristocratic hunting motifs found on antique English pottery.
