About Dimelza

Dimelza Broche is a Jacksonville based Cuban artist. She attended the Leopoldo Romanach Academy of Art in Santa Clara, Cuba. She studied for two years at Florida State College of Jacksonville before transferring to the University of North Florida where she graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, painting, drawing, and printmaking. Dimelza has exhibited her work at Roberts Gallery, the Women’s Center of Jacksonville, the Wilson Center Gallery, The Cummer Museum of Arts & Gardens, and at the S. Dillon Ripley Center, Washington, DC. She was also the Grand Prize recipient of Momentum: a National Juried Exhibit for emerging artists with disabilities.

Dimelza explains the work by saying, “In this series I examine the nature of dreams as a conduit to the unconscious. In my work I present dreams as cathartic in nature. My imagery of unraveling twine and bursting balloons alludes to the release of unconscious desires and fears through dreams. The potential violence of this release is epitomized by the jarring pop of a pierced balloon. In this context blankets and twine become symbols of transformation. The blankets suggest sleep and the transition of the mind from the conscious state to the unconscious state. The twine, like the strands of silk in an insect cocoon, is metamorphic. With release the figures are transformed. My work insists that the release of unconscious desires and fears through dreams is a catalyst for transformation.”
